The River House is in a beautiful setting on the Tukituki River in Hawke's Bay, midway between Havelock North and Ocean Beach.
The property, designed by Andy Coltart as part of the Black Barn river lodges development comprises a five bedroom villa set within Mediterranean-like grounds of poplar, citrus, olive and cypress trees, agapanthas, and a vineyard. With stunning views over the vines to the river and up to Te Mata Peak it offers a fabulous venue for weddings, garden parties, corporate events, product launches, and more.
The River House has three lawned areas, two sheltered courtyards and a stunning ceremony location.
There is a 30m x 20m marquee lawn capable of accommodating marquees for up to 200 guests and two smaller lawned areas ideal for lawn games or smaller marquees.
The larger courtyard is an ideal setting for drinks on arrival and can be covered with a marquee if the weather demands so can double up as a fall back option for ceremonies.
There is a wide grassed avenue between the vines ideal for ceremonies with stunning views up to Te Mata Peak.
With huge views down the river and up to the hills beyond you get a great feeling of space and with the all-day Hawkes Bay sunshine the olive and poplar trees provide welcome dappled shade.
The River House is a beautifully furnished family home – not a soulless corporate rental!
The house comfortably sleeps ten in five doubles with three shower rooms (one en-suite).
There is a large kitchen and drawing room with open fireplace with stunning views to the river.
East and west courtyards ideal for all day entertaining always giving a sheltered option if the breeze picks up.
Use of the beautiful pool area with 12m swimming pool and covered seating area is included when renting the entire property.
The accommodation in the house is available for a minimum period of 4 days (this is charged over and above any venue fee).
Further detail available on request.
The River House can accommodate anything from small intimate events to large marquee wedding receptions - an intimate cocktail party for 40 in the courtyard or a corporate launch on the spacious lawns. We do not have min / max numbers but let us know your plans and we can see if we can accommodate them.
We own and operate Marquees over Hawke's Bay and so have considerable experience “building” weddings and events. Hireage is through our company and we also have a list of approved suppliers – venue fees vary according to hireage.
The garden enjoys all day sunshine and with great views over the vines to the river and hills beyond with countless photo opportunities it is no surprise that weddings are our most popular type of event.

Literally sitting on the Tukituki River with the cycle loop passing our gate there are two activities on your doorstep but if trout fishing and cycling are not your thing may be a gentle walk along the river path up and around the Black Barn River Lodges or a trip to the beach.
Surf, paddleboard, fish, walk or just sunbathe at the huge sandy surf beaches at Ocean Beach (10 mins) and Waimarama (20 mins).
Craggy Range (3 mins), Black Barn (5 mins), Elephant Hill and Clearview (15 mins), all provide delicious wine tasting and great food from world class sophistication to local rustic.
The world class golf course at Cape Kidnappers is just 20 mins down the road at Te Awanga. If golf is your thing then this is unmissable – rankings vary from 12th - 40th in the world depending on which publication – either way it is a gem (and tough!) and it is just down the road.
Other “must sees and dos” include the art deco city of Napier (Art Deco Festival in February), the Cape Kidnappers gannet colony, winery bike trails; Te Mata Peak, Horse of the Year Show (March), winery concerts throughout the summer and much, much more ...
